Baby Chics

Oh My they are so cute. I love having the little ones. On March 12, 2011 Joe, my son, brought home 8 Black Copper Marans. We are keeping 4 and we are giving 4 to a friend.

Well, we decided we will want a couple of more hens when we have to give up 4 of the Marans . So March 13 we added 2 adorable light Brahmas.
I named this one Bella I hope its a hen.

This one is Daisy

no problem putting them with the Marans

So far so good we seem to have all healthy chickens.

The original chickens in the flock.

I was wrong when I said we got the chickens in October. My images have revealed that we got them in December.  My bad! So with that correction I will post some of the pics from that time.

I think this is all but one.
Rhode Island Reds
I have to admit I am a bit afraid of these chickens. I don't even try to pick them up. I have tried to feed them out of my hand but they were not interested. That is what I really want to be able to do. So I think right now the plan is to keep the 5 hens until the new little ones we bought in march start to lay. Then we will invite the Chickenator over. I'm not sure I could kill them myself but I am sure I could eat them.

The Chicken Coop

I thought I would also post a couple of pictures of the chicken coop and run we have.

Backyard Chickens

Wow who would have ever thought that I would be raising chickens and blogging? I have always considered myself a city girl but living in the country. When my son came home with a chicken coop and run I thought to myself, what now! It sat empty for a couple of months and I found myself on the internet looking up the pros and cons of of raising backyard chickens. I'm convinced that raising chickens for eggs and healthy food was a great idea.
In October we filled the coop with 2 Ameraucana's that were already laying, 2- 4 month old Barred Rocks,
2 -4 month old  Black Sex Links, 2 - 4 month old Rhode Island Reds. We were told that the two Ameraucana's would stop laying for a couple of week due to the move, well sure enough about 12 days later we got out first egg.
